On 7 October 2021, Indonesia's parliament finally passed the harmonized taxation bill, which will lead to the enactment of the Harmonized Taxation Law.

The law will be the second “omnibus law” issued by the Government of Indonesia. The new law aims to optimize tax revenue collection as the key source for the recovery of Indonesia’s economy from the spending caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
There are six key areas of policy improvement covered in this new “omnibus law”, which include:

• income tax
• value-added tax (VAT) and carbon tax
• Voluntary Disclosure Program (VDP)
• several adjustments to the Law on General Provisions and Taxation Procedures and the Law on Excise

It has been viewed that this new law is a significant overhaul of Indonesia’s tax system and therefore it is important to be able to navigate through these changes.
