The United States can gain significant domestic and international advantages by placing health squarely on its foreign policy agenda. Supporting public health worldwide will enhance U.S. national security, increase prosperity at home and abroad, and promote democracy in developing countries and those in transition. Amidst the Covid19 pandemic, cross border health screenings and access to vaccine is not just about human rights, but it is also about nations collaborating to ensure future global health.

In addition to development assistance for global health, the importance of the U.S. commitment to health research cannot be overemphasized. One half of the world’s health research can be attributed to investments by the American taxpayer. With the newly founded Covid19 vaccine by a prominent US R&D based pharmaceutical company, the world is looking more and more at US involvement in public health, across border, in terms of drug discovery and the preventions side of it, such as testing and screening. Such a gigantic responsibility needs to be embedded in Biden’s Foreign Policy task, thus reinstating US as the world leader in securing public health. How is this role best played in Southeast Asia?
